Conzinha Minerais
The food in Brazil is amazing, and the traditional fare of Minas Gerais is especially
delicious. Many restaurants offer self-service style dishes for lunch, where
food is laid out as in a buffet, and you pay according to how much you eat (by weight.)
The staple food here is rice, beans and cassava, with various other vegetables. But
make no mistake: people in Brazil eat meat like there's no tomorrow! Breakfast, lunch,
or dinner wouldn't be complete without a big slab of beef, chicken or pork.

20. Picanha na chapa c/ fritas e mussarela: sliced beef & cheese fries (health food)
Throughout the city are cafes and "lanchonettes"; these aren't mere eateries, they are
institutions for gathering. People in Brazil are very warm, outgoing and affectionate, and
love to socialize. They meet, drink and eat together, often all night long, till the
wee hours of the morning.

21. A local institution: Skol beer and finger foods sold here
Brazil is also blessed with excellent beer ("cerveja".) The most popular beer in Brazil is Skol, but for
the most demanding beer drinkers (i.e., alcoholics), the favorite is undoubtedly Bohemia. Wow, that is
really good stuff, one of the best Pilseners I've ever tasted. At only R$1.25 (40 cents US) per bottle,
the price is definately right.

22. Sharing a cold beer after work, a daily tradition
Forget the stale nachos, the finger food here is hard to beat. When I get the munchies, I go to a pastéis
shop next door, where they serve (among others) delicious patties made to your order. Typically filled with
spicy beef (carne) or salty chicken (frango), these treats make a perfect companion for beer drinking.
Besides patties, other local favorites include "pão de queijo" (cheese bun), "empadas" (mini-pies), and
"folhados" (puff pastry.) Yum!!

23. Fresh pastéis coming right up!!
The coolest place to hang out and have a drink, though, is by Praça Savassi. At the Cafe com Letras,
patrons bring their own guitars and percussions to sing and dance all night, while the more intellectual
types visit the attached bookstore and discuss the latest issues.
